The focus is on doing something similar to the competition - increasing the size of their advert year on year, or to change to a colour ad, because they read somewhere that this is how to “increase the impact it has on the reader”…?

Okay, there IS some truth in the effect size and colour will have on the impact of your advert, but it's not only about attracting attention... you need people to CALL you! It would be far better to focus a headline, or a “cast iron guarantee” or a compelling offer or a powerful call to action or something else which is more likely to help your ad to actually sell… wouldn't you agree?
